This reflects a wider lack of confidence in basic practical skills, including DIY. Many people, especially younger adults and women, feel they were never taught how to do things like hang a shelf, unblock a drain, or fix a loose cupboard hinge. And so they outsource, often at a high cost.
The problem is this approach isn’t sustainable. Aside from the financial burden, it leads to frustration, delays, and even anxiety - especially when it comes to something that could be fixed in minutes with the right know-how. According to a YouGov poll, 42% of 18–34-year-olds in the UK have avoided a DIY task due to fear of getting it wrong.
